Breastfeeding - Lactation Consultants
We live in a bottle-feeding culture. Mothers who want to do the best for their children and decide to breastfeed face many problems as a result. Many don't know how or how often to breastfeed. When problems occur, most of us don't know what has caused them and how to solve them. When this happens, don't give up. Call a lactation consultant. Even if you have to pay a bit (most charge about $60 for each visit), in the long run you and your baby will benefit. By continuing breastfeeding, you'll improve your baby's and your own health, and you'll be saving money too. - First, look for on-line information--chances are many other mothers have had problems similar to yours and there are web pages concerning them:
- Ask the lactation consultant
Board certified lactation consultant Debbi Donovan will answer your questions about breastfeeding. A lot of questions and answers are already posted at this location. Chances are you will find a satisfactory answer to your question there. Otherwise, Debbi usually gives you a thorough and thoughtful answer in about two days. Very informative site! You might consider visiting it regularly just to see what new messages appear. - Ask La Leche League. A board certified lactation consultant get back to you in about a week by e-mail. For a quick answer, you can call them at 847-519-7730. In the US you can call toll free 800-LALECHE. Si usted quiere preguntar en español, puede usar nuestra solicitud de ayuda en español.
- If your problem appears to be serious or needs immediate attention, call a lactation consultant in your area. If necessary, she'll give you a home visit. Do it, it's really worth it!
