I have thought a lot about tradition and what that word really means to most of us. For some it brings to mind activities or food that is handed down through hundreds of years in a family.
I, however, don't think of traditions as necessarily something old and classical. They are something that creates a continuity to our family life; something that connects us to each other. To me, if you play a polka every Christmas and dance around the table laughing with your family right before you eat ( who knew?) that is a tradition.
No, it's not serious, and it isn't something your Great Great Grandma Maude did at her table, but it makes your holiday unique and it fills your house with love and laughter. Isn't that a meaningful tradition that creates lasting memories?
I would like to think that each family creates it own traditions AND keeps the ones that have been passed down. The old and the new together creates memories for your family that will be passed down to the next generation. They can be whimsical or touching; as long as it's something that creates a bond between family members or friends.
If you can't be with your own family you can still have traditions. Extended family includes friends and loved ones. As they always say "home is where the heart is", so don't skip the special occasions if you can't be with your immediate family. Be sure not to limit yourself to what you think traditions SHOULD be, but instead follow your heart and create your own occasions to remember.
