A Fork in the Road

In the past, we were told that we would be able to have a career and raise a family. We could Have It All. We believed it. We got our education, got our jobs, and then, we had our children. And many of us discovered that if this is what Having It All is like, maybe we don't want It All, after all. I came to a fork in the road a few years ago and decided that I would follow my heart, and follow the "motherhood" route. I'm thankful that working at home has allowed me to continue working, because I actually enjoy work too. However, as much as I like my home business, I can't imagine a job that could give me the satisfaction I get from raising my girls. And that's the good news. I've found that motherhood isn't a one-way street. I'm getting back so much more from my role as "mom" than I'm giving. I know people always say that being a parent is the most difficult job there is, and there are challenges, but I can't imagine anything else I'd rather be doing. My 5-year-old summed it up for me as she was getting ready for bed the other night. She asked me, "Mom, what would you do without me?" I thought about our bedtime stories, hugs, "I love mommy" notes and the laughs we have together. That night, as I watched her sleep, I thought the same thing myself, what would I do without them?
