Sweeping Changes For The IRS

Have you ever had to call the IRS? To begin with, you need to navigate through a maze of voice mail prompts in order to reach a human to speak with. Once you reach this person, the information they provide you with is not necessarily even accurate! In fact, according to audits done by the IRS on its own facilities during tax season, one in three of their employees actually provided an incorrect answer to the taxpayer! Just wonderful, huh?

Well, things are finally changing!

A commission has been created called the National Commission on Restructuring the Internal Revenue Service. Its purpose is to examine all aspects of the agency and to make it easier for taxpayers to interact with the IRS.

The commission has already suggested creating a seven member board of directors, stabilizing the IRS budget for the next three years, allowing the IRS more flexibility in hiring qualified personnel, providing for more IRS input into the administrability of tax laws BEFORE they are enacted, and simplifying the tax laws.

There is always the possibility that we will move toward a total restructuring of the income tax laws including the simple one page return that many legislators are beginning to support, or even a flat tax option.

The current tax laws are explained in hundreds of publications and guides which require a multitude of forms and related schedules to complete.

In spite of the abundance of information from the IRS, there are many interpretations of the laws with resulting discrepancies on the tax returns amounting to thousands of dollars. Each year Money magazine asks several tax preparers to complete a federal tax return for a fictitious taxpayer. Even though they are all given the same facts regarding the financial situation of this taxpayer, no two preparers arrive at the same income tax liability.

Certainly makes you wonder!
