Oprah Calling

By Cheryl Demas

I often wonder if other Work At Home Moms share my home business fantasies. Most of the time, my feet are firmly planted on the ground. I have my business plan, I work hard each day and slowly make progress towards my goals.

But there are days when I imagine that the next phone call will be a publisher calling with a great book deal, or a big investing group calling to ask where they should send the check. Now, not all of my fantasies are this good mind you. I have my down days too, when I’ve been sure that this will never work out, and that there will never be another visitor to my web site. I will look back years from now and wonder why I ever devoted so much time and energy to such a losing proposition. So I will decide that I need a break, and to cheer myself up, I will pack up the car and the kids and we’ll head to the zoo for the day. We’ll eat junk food and stroll around and just waste time in general.

But then I’ll start thinking about my business again, and I’ll fantasize that while I’m gone, Oprah will call, but I won’t be home, so she will leave a message saying that they’re looking for woman to talk about Work At Home Moms on the show, and they would love to have me come to Chicago, but I have to call her back before 5:00 that day, or they will have to call someone else. And I don’t get the message until late that night because I’ve decided to take the girls to the zoo for the day. After all, flexibility is the reason I like working from home so much, and my kids are the most important thing to me. There we are, having a great time at the zoo, but I can’t stop thinking about Oprah, So I start to get a little panicked, and I call voice mail, just to check. But, there aren’t any messages, and of course there really aren’t any messages from Oprah or her producers, so I hang up and think about what a dork I am.

I don’t think I’m alone in my fantasies. At least I hope not. From the conversations I’ve had with other Work At Home Moms, these ups and downs are pretty common, the fantasies just seem to be a part of being self-employed. So if you’re someone who is deciding if home business is right for you, keep this in mind. You won’t have many routine, boring days in front of you. It can be a roller coaster, this home business lifestyle, but I’m willing to stay put for the ride. In fact, I prefer it. So if you think you’re up for a few laps on the coaster, buy your ticket and join us. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

(Memo to Oprah, you can call anytime!)
